There’s a very typical interaction where Rocks misinterprets what she’s saying at “women grow up better than men.” The guys end up at Tabatha’s parents party, and Tabatha delivers a sermon about the nature of men maturing/growing up, and how it’s different from women, more natural, biological. Jake is indecisive, and he’s coming to grips with that. Here again we see another central theme of the film: that being an adult is about making decisions. The guys go to a party in the park so Jake can see Tabatha, and while they’re shooting the shit, he just plainly asks her: “Hey, should I stay in New York?” Jake has a conversation with the priest, where he delivers some wisdom to Jake in the form of telling him there are usually more than two options, but he can’t tell him what to do. He very and charmingly apologizes, like he’s done this many times.Įmma tells Billy that she doesn’t want him in the delivery room. B Story (30)ĮMMA shows up at Billy’s work, mad at him because he missed their baby appointment to go drinking with his friends. Jake delivers a sermon to the kids at Billy’s job about life, love and death. Rocks tells Jake that Tabatha is single now.Īt a pizza place, Jake laments the fact that finally Tabatha is single and now he’s leaving. This is a guy living in the past, recalling his past with his ex. He takes down a street sign and puts it in a bathroom that he and Tabatha had sex in. Jake is also compelled to remove a street sign after saying “I just want to do something stupid.” Here again, it seems Jake just wants to be like other artists. Jake sees an old piece of his work on the walls. He’s all over the place, one moment ready to quit, and with almost no effort, the guys convince him to keep going. Jake is unsure of himself, and we see that exemplified in this moment. Jake tries to convince them cancel the rest of the day, then they easily convince him to keep going. (to Billy) Can you get out of work early? I’ve been shaming the guy all day, it hasn’t made a dent. No he’s just looking for a reason to stay. Guys, he doesn’t want to go back to Ohio, I mean he invited Tabatha, why did he do that? Gund and Jake have a debate about Jake moving into his Dad’s basement and giving up his dreams of being an artist.īilly is convinced that if they show Jake a great day, they can convince him to stay. With this line, we’re foreshadowing that maybe Jake is indeed chasing a dream or the idea of being an artist. He put his paintings up there specifically because that’s where McKenzie got his start. This propels Jake into an emotional crisis, which ultimately force him to address his own identity, his own authenticity, and whether he’s really an artist. Jake goes to his gallery to find that all of his work has been destroyed by another artist Jake idolizes who thinks that Jake is trying to copy his style of “New York nostalgia”.
